On November 14, Heydar Aliyev Foundation organized another spectacular event within the framework of the project of propogating Azerbai¬jan in Germany. Heydar Aliyev Foundation suppor¬ted the Evening of Azerbaijan with the help of the honorary consulate in Stuttgart.

Works of the renowned Azerbaijani compo¬sers Gara Garayev, Fikrat Amirov and Jovdat Hajiyev were played by People's Artists of Azerbaijan Farhad Badalbayli, Murad Huseynov and also by Cologne-based Minguet Quartett. "Miniatures" by Fikrat Amirov, "Ballad" by Jovdat Hajiyev, "Gaytaghi" by Tofig Guliyev were admired by the audience. In his speech, the Flonorary Consul of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Stuttgart Otto Fjauser called the Azerbaijani music and traditions a real treasure. Fie also stressed that Azerbaijan has his¬torically been a land of tolerance.




100th anniversary of"Arshin mal alan"at  UNESCO Headquarters

 Twenty and thirteen was a successful year for the Azerbaijani culture. Among the cultural successes of our country was the celebra tion of the 8SO anniversary of Nizami Ganjavi, 900th anniversary of Mahsati Ganjavi worldwide, organization of the V Music Festival in Gabala and Baku International Jazz Festival were among the cultural successes of our country.


Gara Garayev's 95th anniversary celebrated


The prominent composer, educator and public figure Gara Garayev was born in 1918 in Baku. He received his first music education in the faculty of workers at Azerbaijan State Conservatoire. Later he received lessons of composition from Professor Rudolf and lessons of Azerbaijani folk music from U.Hajibeyli. Among his masterpieces are the ballet Seven Princesses inspired by the poem of the same name by Nizami, Don Quixote (symphonic sketc­hes), Leyli and Majnun, Suite of Vietnam. On 13 February 2013, a concert dedicated to Gara Garayev's 95th anniversary was held at the Composers Union of Azerbaijan. The anniversary was marked both in Baku and in other cities. On December 18, it was celebrated also in Budapest on the initiative of the embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Hungary. In his speech at the begin­ning of the concert, the Hungarian musicologist Ta- mas Varhegyi spoke about Gara Garayev's position and role in the Azerbaijani and global music, of the features of his advanced symphonic music and of the innovations he introduced to the 20th century music. A similar event was celebrated in Moscow, Russia,too. On February 21, a concert program dedicated to Gara Garayev's 95th anniversary was held as part of the Cultural Days of Azerbaijan in Kuwait. Parts from the compositions by Gara Garayev, Leyli and Maj­nun, Seven Princesses and Path of Thunder were performed by the Azerbaijan State Symphonic Or­chestra named after Uzeyir Hajibeyli conducted by Honored Artist Fakhraddin Karimov.




"Mugham world" Third Internationa Mugham Festival


"Mugham World" third international mugham fes­tival was held in Baku with the support of Heydar Ali­yev Foundation, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan, the Union of the Composers of Azerbaijan. International scientific symposium, contest of mu­gham singers and concerts of the famous musicians of the world were held during the festival, which took place between March 9 and 19. A concert program was organized in the Palace named after Heydar Aliyev with participation of the skilful performer of the flamenco dance, actor, choreographer, famous Spanish dancer Joaquin Cortes within the framework of the festival. Famous musicians from Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, United States, France, Canada, England, Libya, Brazil, Spain, Italy, Germany, Jordan, Japan, Turkmenistan, Russia, China, India, Tunisia, and Egypt were invited to take place in the festival. Azerbaijan came second in the Eurovision song contest 2013


Farid Mammadov, who represented Azerbaijan in the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Malmo, Sweden, came second with 234 points according to the results of voting. Fie performed the song"Hold me'written by Dimitrios Kontopoulos with lyrics by John Ballard and Ralph Charlie. Azerbaijan received most points from the following countries: Israel (12), Austria (12), Hun­gary (12), Bulgaria (12), Russia (12), Malta (12), Greece (12), Georgia (12), Montenegro (12), Lithuania (12), Ro­mania (10), Belarus (10) and Ukraine (10).The winner of the contest was determined by the jury and spectators of 39 countries.




Gabala was declared one of CIS cultural capitals in 2013

 On June 29, Gabala hosted a solemn opening ceremony for interstate program "Cultural Capital of CIS in 2013". Chairman of the Foundation's Board Po- lad Bulbuloglu and a large delegation consisting of the representatives of CIS countries took part in the ceremony.


Days of Azerbaijani culture in Cannes, France

On July 4, the Days of the Azerbaijani culture organized by Heydar Aliyev Foundation in Cannes, France, was launched with the film "Arshin mal alan"shot in 1945. The film based on the operetta of the same name by Uzeyir Hajibeyli, forms a golden page in the history of the Azerbaijani cinematography and is a rare piece of art that delivers to the audience a nice picture of Baku of the early twentieth century. The Promenade de la Croisette, the famous boulevar of Cannes hosted a concert of Natig Rh­ythm Band and Azerbaijan State Dance Ensemb­le. The concert was attended by the First Lady of Azerbaijan, President of Heydar Aliyev Foundation Mehriban Aliyeva and her family members. The concert made a great impression on the audien­ce. Conveying the sound of naghara, our national musical instrument to Cannes, Natig Rhythm Band fascinated the audience.

V International Music Festival  held in Gabala

On July 24 - August 6,2013, the fifth International Music Festival took place in Gabala. The Gabala festival, which holds a special place among the grand interna­tional projects of Heydar Aliyev Foundation, is being tra­ditionally held since 2009. The fifth edition of the music festival that brings together well-known performers and bands from different countries took place this year. This festival has won a special place for Gabala on the world music map. Prominent musicians, bands, soloists and conduc­tors from Azerbaijan and foreign countries took part in the festival which ran until August 6. The music festival was attended by world-renowned conductors, per­formers and bands from Russia, Turkey, UK, USA, Italy, France, Korea, Israel, Lithuania, Cuba and Kazakhstan. The Jerusalem Symphonic Orchestra, Yuri Bashmet and New Russias Symphony Orchestra, Cuba jazz group, Amos Talmon, Boris Berezovsky, Vadim Repin, Oksana Yablonskaya, Dmitry Yablonsky, Yader Benjamini, Mirko Roverelli, Carmelo Corrado Caruso, Idil Beret, Nina Ko­gan, Jean Bernard Pommier, Jan Lothem Konig, Ayman Musakhajayeva, Alexander Solovyov, Sergei Leiferkus, Muza Rubazkite, Hee Youn Choue, Mikhail Gutman and others took part in the festival. The festival concerts featured Azerbaijani State Symphonic Orchestra named after Uzeyir Hajibayli, Baku State Music Academy's chamber orchestra, Peo­ple's Artists Farhad Badalbayli, Rauf Abdullayev, Murad Adigozal-zade, Yalchin Adigozalov, Murad Huseynov, Yegana Akhundova, Mansum Ibrahimov, Honored Art­ists Fakhraddin Karimov, Gulnaz Ismayilova.Togrul Gani­yev, Elchin Azizov, Farida Mammadova, Sabina Asadova, Elchin Hashimov, Elnur Ahmadov, Sahib Pasha-zade, laureates of international competitions Fuad Ibrahimov, Yusif Eyvazov, Elvin Ganiyev, Azar Rza-zade, talented young soloists, mugham singers and others. The pianist Mushfig Guliyev won the competition "Art of the 21” century'of the young performers held in Italy.



Event dedicated to the 101 st anniversary of  Niyazi

On August 20, an event dedicated to the 101st anniversary of Niyazi took place in his house-mu- seum. From 1936 through 1981 Niyazi wrote and conducted themes of dozens of Azerbaijani films. The music of the last silent and first sound film of Azerbaijan "Almaz" and of the first documentary "Spring of the Turkish woman" belongs to Niyazi. He also conducted the themes of Distant shores ("Uzaq sahillarda"), Find that girl ("O qizi tapin"), Ma­gic Gown (“Sehirli xalat").




100th anniversary of"Arshin mal alan"at UNESCO Headquarters

Festivities dedicated to the 100rh anniversary of the famous operetta by the great Azerbaijani composer Uzeyir Hajibeyli "Arshin Mal Alan" (“The Cloth Peddler") was held at UNESCO Headquarters on Septem-ber 17.

The events were organized by TURKSOY and permanent missions of Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan to UNESCO.

A photo exhibition, which reflec¬ted the creation of the musical mas¬terpiece and the 20-year-long acti¬vity of TURKSOY, as well as a concert dedicated to this magnificent piece of art were held as part of celebra¬tions.

Accompanied by Karaganda Sy¬mphony Orchestra, soloists from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkey and Kyrgyzstan performed in the concert.



''Azerbaijanfilm" studio celebrates its 90th anniversary

In 2013, Azerbaijanfilm studio named after Jafar Jabbarli marked its 90th anniversary.

A celebration dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Azerbaijanfilm studio named after Jafar Jabbarli was held at Nizami Cinema House in Baku.

Minister of Culture and Tourism Abulfaz Garayev welcomed the guests at the official opening cere¬mony of the event, and said that "Azerbaijani cine¬matography has covered along history by cohering all phases of the modern world cinema."

He added that the contemporary Azerbaijani films draw attention and receive prizes in interna¬tional competitions. "We held competitions, and charge shooting of films to young producers. The material and technical basis of the Azerbaijani cin¬ematography has been strengthened in the recent years. At present, 8 films are being shot in Azerbaijan, and I believe, they will be successfull. Shooting films on the recent history of Azerbaijan is one of the ma¬jor tasks of the studio." Azerbaijani folk dances and solo music were performed by the Azerbaijan Sym¬phony Orchestra at the event.




Intemational Jazz Festival in Baku


The opening ceremony of Baku International Jazz Festival organized by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan and Azerbaijani Culture Foundation took place in the International Mugam Center on October 23. The opening ceremony was attended by Minister of Culture and Tourism Abulfaz Garayev, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Huseyn Bagirov, U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan Ric¬hard Morningstar, jazz performers and guests from all over the world. Among the guests of the festival was the famous French actor Gerard Depardieu. Baku hosted the International Jazz Festival for the 11th time. This time the festival was opened by Joshua Redman.

Within the framework of the festival Joshua Redman, Kerry Garrett, Avishai Cohen, Marcus Mil¬ler, Christoph Cech and others performed at Hey- dar Aliyev Palace, International Mugham Center and Baku Jazz Center.The Azerbaijani talents such as Salman Gambarov, Emil Afrasiyab, Mirjavad Ja- farov and other musicians performed solo at the festival.




Ganja will be European Youth Capital in 2016


Ganja was officially announced to be the European Youth Centre in 2016 in Thessaloniki, Greece. The European Youth Forum project was materialized and chose the European Youth Ca¬pital for the first time in 2009. The first European Youth Capital was Rotterdam, the Netherlands, in 2009, followed by Torino, Italy, in 2010, Antwerp, Belgium, in 2011, Braga, Portugal, in 2012, Ma- ribor, Slovenia, in 2013, Thessaloniki, Greece, in 2014, and Cluj Napoca, Romania, in 2015.

Galway (Ireland),

Ganja (Azerbaijan),

La Laguna (Spain),

Varna (Bulgaria),

Vilnius (Lithuania).

Coruna (Spain),

Gran Canaria (Spain),

Konya (Turkey),

Limassol (Cyprus) and Plovdiv (Bulgaria) were also nominated for being the European Youth Capital in 2016. Being chosen the European Youth Capital demonstrates youth activity, high level of awareness and development of youth in that particular city. As a result of the bid, Gan¬ja was officially announced the European Youth Capital in 2016.



Concert devoted to Nizami Ganjavi in Paris

Paris hosted an exhibition devoted to the life and creative activity of the great Azerbaijani poet Nizami Ganjavi at the Museum of Letters and Ma¬nuscripts on November 12. The exhibition was held with the support of Heydar Aliyev Foundati¬on and of the Azerbaijani Embassy to France.

The Museum's authorized representative Pas¬cal Fulacher said that the poet's "Divan", which includes over 20,000 verses, is very well known in the Eastern countries, and his works touched upon the social problems, praised love and bea¬uty. He noted the significance of the exhibition in popularising the humanist philosopher and poet in France, as well as in the reapproachment of the Western and Eastern cultures.

In his speech, the Azerbaijani Ambassador to France Elchin Amirbeyov said that the great Azer¬baijani philosopher and poet Nizami Ganjavi, one of the brightest persons of the Oriental renais¬sance and humanity, has left a matchless literary heritage. He recalled that on the occasion of the 850th anniversary of Nizami Ganjavi, 1991 was declared the Year of Nizami Ganjavi by UNESCO, and that a monument of the poet was erected in Rome in 2012. He also informed about a series of events would be held in France on the occasion of the 870th anniversary of the eminent master with the support of Heydar Aliyev Foundation.

The First Baku Internationa Tourism Film Festival


The opening ceremony of the first Baku In-ternational Tourism Film Festival took place in Nizami Film House in Baku on November 21-23. The Festival was opened with the film "Return to the Caucasus" in which the world-famous French actor Gerard Depardieu stared. A co-production of Azerbaijan and France, the film involved actor Anvar Hasanov, anchorman Fuad Akhundov, pro-ducers Stephan Bergoinou, Jean-Pierre Deviler. The first Baku International Tourism Film Fes-tival consisted of 7 nominations. A total of 215 films were submitted to the festival by 140 pro-ducers from 38 countries. Seventy eight feature films of 74 producers from 31 countries were ad-mitted. The Grand Prix award was won by the film "Certainly, Dubai” produced by Babak Amini from the United Arab Emirates.

For different categories silver and bronze awards were presented to the participants res-pectively. The National Award of the Festival was won by the film "City within city"directed by Vasif Mammad-zade.




Exhibition and concert dedicated to the 900th anniversary of Mahsati Ganjavi held in France


The Heydar Aliyev Foundation organized an exhibi¬tion and concert marking the 900th anniversary of the great Azerbaijani poetess Mahsati Ganjavi in Mullhouse, France, on the 10th of December. The event was also supported by the Azerbaijani embassy to France. Mah¬sati Ganjavi was the representative of the Muslim rena¬issance, the first Azerbaijani poetess and chess player.

It was noted that cultural ties between Azerbai¬jan and France have unique historical roots. The great French poet Alexander Duma's trip to Azerbaijan in the second half of the 19th century, translation by Ge¬orge Sand of famous “Koroghlu" epic poem into Fren¬ch, publication of the collection "The Caucasus" at the beginning of the 19th century in Paris, Azerbaijani writer Umbulbanu Asadullayeva's living in France, and, finally, the meeting of Charles de-Gaulle, who has played a significant part in the public and political life of France, with Ahmadiyya Jabrayilov are bright examples of the friendship between our peoples. It was also mentioned that Mahsati Ganjavi lived and created in Ganja, Azerba¬ijan's second largest city, which was selected the Euro¬pean Youth Capital 2016.AAmbassador of Azerbaijan to France Elchin Amirbe- yov informed the visitors about the life and creative ac¬tivity of Mahsati Ganjavi. He underlined that the exhibits related to the period of her life were demonstrated at the exhibitions organized in different reigions of France, including Mullhouse.

Then the Azerbaijani singers performed compositi¬ons, and recited poems of Mahsati Ganjavi.
